Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon
Today we are trying another affordable bourbon, Wild Turkey 101. According to the website, this is a mix of 6 to 8 year old bourbons. In my pre-whiskey drinking days, the name Wild Turkey 101 evoked a level of fear at the bar as it was normally used as a method of punishment against a friend or sometimes, a mutually acknowledged yet unspoken agreement to kick the night into high gear via a round (or two) of shots. But now I am a mature (somewhat) adult whiskey drinker so let’s take it through the steps and see how it tastes.
ABV: 50.5%
How it smells…light on the nose with cinnamon, apples and a touch of honey.
How it tastes…sweet on the start followed by that nice rye spiciness. The end has your traditional vanilla and oak but also a bit of sweet chocolatey malt. The finish has a flash of cinnamon and some cayenne pepper on the linger.
Price…$25-$27

Final thoughts….This is a nice little sipper, especially for the price point. At under $30, you get a well aged (6-8 years) rye-forward bourbon that has some nice sweet notes balanced by a touch of oak and some rye and baking spices to round it out. This drinks well above its price point so a 4x 🥃 is well deserved. Is this the best bourbon I’ve ever had? No, but it’s a great value buy and I’m likely to keep one on hand, perhaps in my decanter. I’d like to do a blind tasting with this and perhaps 1792 Small Batch and Old Forester 100 proof to try to find my ultimate sub-$30 bottle of bourbon. Any recommendations for other bottles worthy of the challenge?
