Stellum Bourbon “Lyra”
Stellum is a newer label created by the folks behind Barrell Craft Spirits, blending whiskeys from IN, KY, and TN. You would have to ask them about their strategy, but it seems they want to add a more consistent staple product at a lower price point than the unique batch release strategy of the sister business.
The “Lyra” is part of the single barrel program made from bourbons made from 75% Corn, 21% Rye, and 4% Barley Malt. While a Non-Aged-Statement release, it is labeled as a “Straight” bourbon, so we can infer that the juice is aged at a minimum of 4 years. My particular single bottle is a “C3” and was picked by @thewhiskyguys at Gordons Wine.
As always, when I do my tastings of barrel/cask strength bottles, I use my @norlanglass pipette to add water.
ABV: 59.94%
How it smells…Sweet vanilla but not too alcohol-forward despite the near 120 proof. With some water it brings out maple syrup.
How it tastes…Oaky vanilla sweetness with a bit of spice, but remains a smooth sip. With some water, it somehow gets sweeter and the general spiciness turns into a more cinnamon-forward spice with a touch of cayenne pepper, but in a good way. Warms you right up without scorching your mouth.
Price...I picked up this bottle for $55.

Final thoughts…Full disclosure, I really enjoy the various @barrellbourbon releases I have purchased over the past year and their new @stellumspirits line doesn’t miss a beat. At a more approachable price point than their sister business, you should certainly give it a try and if you like what you taste and want to get adventurous, splurge on one of the Barrell releases. If you like to stick with what you know, then Stellum should prove to be a good addition to your shelf.
