Benromach 10 Year
Next up is a Benromach 10 Year old. I initially tasted this bottle over a year ago, albeit under the old label. Assuming that nothing has changed except for the marketing, let’s check it out.
Aged in first-fill ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks.
ABV: 43%
How it smells…lightly smokey with brine, copper and fruitcake.
How it tastes….light up front followed by some peppery notes and ending in some rich creamy malty notes. The finish is sweet with fruits and a hint of smoke on the linger.
Price…. $56.

Final thoughts….This was a nice little sip, just as I remembered it. Initially, I purchased my first bottle of this as a taste testing for a friend who was interested in getting into peated scotch. He traditionally gravitated towards the sherry bombs of Macallan and wanted to expand his bottle selections. This was mid-COVID, so me being the outstanding friend that I am, purchased 6 different bottles and tried to find a gateway recommendation for him to try. While I ultimately recommended the Talisker Distiller Edition Amoroso Finished (excellent, and a bit more sherry-like given the finish), I remembered enjoying this one quite a bit so I just repurchased a bottle with the fancy new label.
Back to the task at hand….this is a nice little entry whisky into a smokey scotch. As a Speyside single malt, it’s a nice little surprise to have some light smoke complement the fruity sherry notes. For a 10 year old, this is very well balanced and easy to drink. You get a bit of spice and malt with that sweet smoke building throughout the sip and at <$60, a 4x 🥃 is a no-brainer.
